Dr Anupam Garrib

Principal Research Associate

I trained in public health medicine in South Africa at a demographic surveillance site in KwaZulu-Natal. In the UK I have worked with NICE on clinical guideline development and in an NHS/Local Authority public health department, before starting at LSTM.

My current research focusses on evaluating strategies for the integrated delivery of HIV and non-communicable disease care as well as clinical studies on the prevention of diabetes.

I am co-ordinating a large phase II randomised placebo-controlled double-blind trial on the use of metformin for the prevention of diabetes in HIV-infected persons in Tanzania (META Trial). I am a co-investigator on the phase III META trial of metformin in HIV-infected persons with pre-diabetes in Tanzania. I was responsible for the design of the trial and am co-ordinating this and supporting implementation.

I have been a part of the RESPOND Africa/NIHR Group for the prevention and management of HIV-infection and non-communicable diseases in Africa at LSTM since 2017. 

I am currently doing some teaching on the Diploma in Tropical Nursing, and have previously taught on a health promotion module and TM&H.
